Categories and tags in WordPress

What are Categories and tags or tags in WordPress? How to use them correctly? Why are they important for SEO? I tell you everything.

The correct use of categories and tags or tags in English is very important to organize your blog information in WordPress.

What will you find about categories and tags in WordPress?

What are Categories and Tags or tags?

They are a way of ordering information for Google and the user. Categories are organized by hierarchies and should always be used, while labels do not use hierarchies and their use is optional. What does this mean?

How to use categories and tags with examples

If we have a technology blog, the categories could be hosting, domain, SEO, influences, social networks, trends. You must create these categories based on the theme of your blog.

Try to create the least possible categories so as not to confuse the user and be able to focus on a niche (a blog about technology focused on hosting and domain would be better than a technology blog in general).

When we write a post in the category “seo” entitled “SEO techniques” we could add the tag “keywords” to be able to put inside this tag all the post of seo in which we talk about makeup.

If we are going to talk a lot about seo, another way to do it could be to create the “seo” category to talk specifically about seo and in this case create labels like “basic”, “expert”, “optimization on pages”, “optimization off pages «,« Positioning »or similar.

But there is also the possibility of creating «Seo» as a subcategory within «keywords«.

It all depends on what you want to focus on but I recommend not using subcategories and choosing a very focused niche so as not to give the reader a thousand options. The most important thing is to keep these categories forever, so it is very important that you define them well from the beginning.

But as I told you, creating many categories and subcategories means that you do not focus and therefore the visits of your blog are of worse quality. You should also note that a single subcategory must be chosen and the upper category must not be chosen.

That is, within the WordPress Categories section there can only be one selection. Otherwise we return to the problem of duplicate content.

Example Categories, subcategories and tags where a single subcategory is selected

Note: Thanks to the Yoast SEO plugin you can choose the Main Category in WordPress when you choose two or more categories. With this Google understands which is the most important by adding a canonical rel. Anyway I always recommend choosing a single category. If your post can fit into several possible categories is that you have not chosen your categories well.

Why are they important for SEO?

Something fundamental that you should know is that each article must be in a single category. You should not choose several categories for a post. You must choose the one that best suits.

If you choose two or more categories then two different URL’s will be created and therefore you will create duplicate content.

This will make Google not know which to position and sometimes it will show a URL in the results and other times another. And that negatively affects SEO so you will lose positions by not focusing on a single URL.

Following the previous example, if you add the post “SEO techniques” in the category “Seo” and “Trends” then the URLs will be generated: yourblog.com/seo/seo-techniques and yourblog.com/trends/seo-techniques with exactly the same content.

Regarding the labels you should always use them (you can add new ones as you create new content), but in this case you can add several.

Two or three would be perfect. Remember to always use the same tag names. If for example you use the “basic” tag, do not use the “simple” tag in other posts. Define some labels and use them when necessary.

The categories generate their own URLs

You should keep in mind that each category generates a page where all the posts that are within this category are put. These pages are indexed very well and it is very important to optimize them by adding a description and content in the form of appropriate text at the top.

You can also add a promo or similar that attracts attention. Thanks to the Yoast SEO plugin you can optimize the SEO of your blog and the use of categories, subcategories and tags.

Conclusions

The use of categories and tags is one of the pillars of SEO to organize your blog information.

Therefore, keep that in mind. Start reviewing your quality articles and choose the categories if you have not already done so.

This is one of the things you should define before creating a blog and what you should check as soon as possible if you already have it.

In the GT Connections News you will find many tips to improve your WordPress blog and I recommend you take a look.

I also recommend that you write a small document in which you indicate the correct use of all these aspects so that there are no problems.
